Denise Carruthers owner of Hot Possum - 'seriously fun patchwork' started the business in 2001, while expecting her first and turns out to be only child... a boy named Zed Jay....

Being a youngish mum and having admired many patchwork quilts, found it frustrating that there was little to choose from in the way of fresh colourful designs in the marketplace for the young ones ... so Hot Possum was born...

First taking it to many local Perth craft fairs and still running a Post Office in a country town down south... the interest and positive feedback was encouraging that in 2005 took the then limited range of 25 designs to the 'International Quilt Market' in Houston Texas... what a heart warming and wonderful experience that turned out to be...

the mantra has always been 'seriously fun patchwork' with beginners in mind and the opportunity for a experienced quilter to experiment and embellish...

having always said...

'take a single bed pattern say the 'Fairy Pretty' and use the pattern not only to make a beautiful quilt but theme the room as well, put the dancing fairies onto sheer curtains or a canvas or a cushion, not only embellish your quilt but embellish the room'

Moving back to Perth after the Houston Quilt Fair, opened a studio in Wembley, where she had the pleasure of introducing many newbies and teaching many wonderful customers, the beauty of Hot Possum designs.. here Denise fell in love even more with colour... selecting all that beautiful fabric in only brights was a 'dream come true'... the studio unfortunately, due to family circumstances, had to close in 2010.

What to do... move the studio into the house... work from home.. the advantages of this have proven to be wonderful, Denise now gets to pick up her boy everyday from school around the corner.. still gets to teach as she offers one to one lessons, still surrounds herself with beautiful colour everyday and finds her creative mind still works overtime...

Denise sees her love of fabric developing in different ways - teenage quilts, something for the mums, sisters, good friends, clothing, home decor, fabric designing.. the list goes on...  but always with the use of the most colourful brights available and with those young ones always in her heart...
